Frequently Asked Questions

Why Is It Important To Conserve Lands Across America And Around The World?

America has both a national and global responsibility to preserve the best of its natural heritage.

How Does Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy Decide Which Lands To Protect?

Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy uses sound conservation science to identify lands targeted for conservation and establish priorities. The criteria for lands being considered for donation include: unique landforms, diversity of habitat and/or biotic communities, natural condition, and rare plants and animals.

The natural eco-regions of America are the basis of conservation planning at Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy. This planning involves interdisciplinary teams working with partners to compile key data on the locations of viable habitats of species of plants, animals, and natural ecosystems within natural eco-regions, and identifying the strategies needed to achieve their effective conservation.

Conservation blueprints, or eco-regional plans, are used to define portfolios of sites that, if conserved, would secure the long-term survival of viable native species and community types in each eco-region. These blueprints allow us to target our efforts and resources directly at the places that matter most to the preservation of America's natural heritage.

What Does Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy Do With The Properties It Has Secured?

Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy’s goal is to ensure that all the natural areas it is involved in helping to secure are cared for, so that they sustain into the future the natural ecosystems that define them.

When it comes to protecting America’s natural habitats, buying land isn’t an end, it’s a beginning. Making sure the lands are well managed, that they continue to be conserved, and their values protected after purchase, is equally important for Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy.

Stewardship responsibilities, for the land secured, vary from case to case, and often depend on the complexity and individual needs of that property. In many cases, the land is managed directly by Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy staff. In other cases, it is gifted to government partners to become part of a national or provincial park.

Our stewardship may be handled by a conservation partner. In all cases, however, Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy takes all steps possible to ensure the ongoing security of the land’s natural values, with legally binding management agreements that outline the partnership arrangements and stipulate how the lands are to be managed.

What Does Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy Do With Donor Dollars?

In the past years, administrative expenses, including fundraising and communications work have maintained an average of 9%. The remaining 91% goes directly to land acquisition or the program costs associated with saving land.

What Is The Difference Between Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy And Other Environmental Organizations?

Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy often works in partnership with other environmental and conservation organizations on projects relevant to our work. However, Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy, like the other organizations, has its own specific mandate and area of focus. It is this ability to focus on a specific area of conservation that makes Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy so effective.

The main difference? Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy’s primary focus is on threatened, ecologically rare sites across a wide range of habitats. Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy focuses primarily on wetlands and associated habitat important for waterfowl populations.

Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy is a national charity, dedicated exclusively to the preservation of ecologically significant land, and the long-term stewardship of that land, through private action.

Unlike many other conservation organizations, Global IT Services - Nature Conservancy is not an advocacy group that lobbies government and industry for action on public land. It opts for a quiet, business like approach based on collaboration rather than confrontation.

What Is An Ecological Gift?

An ecological gift is a donated gift of land or conservation easement. The gift allows donors to claim their charitable deductions against 100% of income in the year the gift is made.

Land Donation: A gift of land from private owners, either corporate or individual. The tax receipt issued is for the appraised fair-market value of the land.

Conservation Easement: A landowner agrees to maintain the environmental value of the land, while retaining ownership and use of it. The owner receives a tax receipt for the difference between the appraised fair-market value of the land and the newly-assessed value based on the environmental restrictions.
